Forage production

DEPARTMENT OF FEEDING OF AGRICULTURAL ANIMALS

The department was created in 1933 and is the leader in the field of a forage of preparation and feeding of cattle and pigs.

MAIN DEVELOPMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
– developed progressive technologies on making of high-quality silo, haylage with use of microbiological medicines and ferments, chemical preservatives, fissile mineral connected local origin (bentonite, shungit);
– developed recipes of compound feeds for youngsters and adult cattle, norm of biologically active additive, premixes to mixed fodder– concentrates for of different ages groups of cattle;
– developed detailed standards and diets of feeding of milk and meat cattle productivity;
– developed methods of preparation of concentrated forages for feeding at cultivation and fattening stagnation of young growth of cattle.

MAIN DIRECTIONS OF ACTIVITY
Improvement of the scientifically-based structure and typical diets of feeding, for different age and genital groups of dairy and beef cattle.
Study of actual nutritional value of local fodder resources, based on accounting and control of detailed indicators, for objective detection of genetic potential of animal productivity.

DEPARTMENT OF PASTURES

The department was formed in 1961, with the aim of improving pasture management at the Kazakh Research Institute of Livestock (Mynbaev village).

MAIN ACTIVITIES:
– development of systems for rational use of pastures;
– development of the main directions for use of distant-pasture for production of beef and improvement of the ecological situation on pastures;
– development of in-season pasture rotation, ensuring restoration of degraded pastures while maintaining its productive longevity;
– improving the methods of radical enhancement of degraded pastures.

MAIN DEVELOPMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
– developed technology of cultivation of sparsely distributed fodder crops in the southeast of Kazakhstan;
– developed technology for the secondary use of saline soils derived from rice monoculture for fodder crops;
– developed effective system for increasing the livestock capacity of pastures to increase the productivity and quality of livestock products;
– developed technology of increasing the efficiency of use of watered pastures;
– studied the use of sewage for feed production and possibility of feeding it to agricultural animals, without reducing the quality of livestock products.

DEPARTMENT OF SELECTION AND SEED FARMING OF FORAGE CROPS

Scientific and industrial works on seed production of forage crops were organized in 1973 on the basis of the selection center for fodder crops of the Kazakh Research Institute of Grassland. In 2002, at the Kazakh Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Forage Production, department for seed production of forage crops was established. Currently, the department employs: 8 researchers, including 1 doctor and 3 candidates of agricultural sciences.

MAIN ACTIVITIES:
– development of a complex of the high-quality agro-processing methods directed to increase the sowing qualities of elite seeds and obligatory introduction of express seed-growing crop rotations;
– exercise of high-quality and seed monitoring;
– providing seed-growing farms of the regions of Southern Kazakhstan with original seeds of forage crops;
– exercise of professional development of testers agronomists, for acquaintance with features of technologies and new grades of forage crops.

DEPARTMENT OF AGROTECHNOLOGY OF FODDER CROPS

The department was established in 2014. The main tasks of the department are:
– development of modern technologies for cultivation of fodder crops, providing a breakthrough in forage production, meeting the principles of the development of “green” agriculture, proceeding from the main activities of improving the technology of cultivation of forage plants;
– development of a complex of varietal agro-technological techniques aimed to increasing the sowing qualities of elite seeds, through environmentally safe technology and fodder crops in fallow lands;
– selection of drought-tolerant fodder crops for the uninterrupted supply of animals with fodder in summer-autumn period, in desert-steppe zone of the Southeast of Kazakhstan.

DEPARTMENT OF THE GENEFOUND AND SELECTION OF FODDER CROPS

Department of selection and gene pool of forage crops was established in 1973, in the structure of the selection center for fodder crops, at the Kazakh scientific research institute of grassland economy. In the structure of LTD “KazNIIZhIK”, the department of genetic resources of fodder crops was established in 2013 with the purpose of restoration and studying of genetic resources of fodder crops. 4 author’s certificates on selection, 2 patents and 21 author’s certificates for different sorts of forage crops were received.

THE BASIC DIRECTIONS OF ACTIVITY:
–  replenishment of gene fund with new sources by exchanging seeds with foreign organizations and collecting wild-growing samples of fodder plants;
–  preservation of collected material in situ and ex situ, reproduction of long-lived samples;
–  complex evaluation of samples in order to allocate valuable sources for use on creating new high-yielding varieties;
–  documenting samples and creating information database to enhance material exchange capabilities;
– creation of different perennial grasses with a high yield of fodder and seeds;
– cultivation of alfalfa and livestock varieties with high quality forage for rain-fed conditions;
– creation of different specific conditions and different feed uses.

MAIN DEVELOPMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
Formed an unique genetic fund of species, varietal, ecotypic diversity of fodder crops (for 1997-2013), consisting of more than 5 thousand samples, allowing to concentrate the world potential, to preserve rare and endangered species, representing scientific and practical value.
Created as a result of methods of experimental polyploidy, polycross, family – group selection, interspecies and intraspecific hybridization, 32 high – yielding varieties of perennial forage crops.
