DEPARTMENT OF DAIRY BREED CATTLE DISTRIBUTION AND SELECTION
The department was among the first scientific subdivisions since the creation of the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Animal Husbandry in 1933
MAIN ACTIVITIES:
– Development of selection and genetic methods on creation of high productive dairy cattle herds and breeding the best genetic materials of domestic and import reproduction.
– Improvement of breeding qualities and increase an efficiency of new types of brown, red- motley, black-motley cattle of Kazakhstan, with the use of the best genotypes of domestic and world gene pools.
– Studying of acclimatization and adaptive features of imported dairy cattle in climatic conditions of various regions of Kazakhstan.
Consulting maintenance of breeding work of cattle of dairy and dairy-meat directions of productivity.
MAIN DEVELOPMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
– unique breeding of dairy cattle “Alatau” and “Aulieata”;
– breeding of a new intra-breed type of brown dairy cattle “Akyris”;
– selection of intra-breed type of red-motley dairy cattle “Ertis”;
– new intra-breed type of black-white cattle “Sairam”;
– recommendations on organization and implementation of breeding work and consolidation of new types of dairy cattle in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

DEPARTMENT OF BREWING AND SELECTION OF MEAT CATTLE
The department was organized as part of the Kazakh Research Institute of Animal Husbandry in 1933. At that time it was carried out mass crossbreeding of local Kazakh cattle with Hereford, and breeding work on reproductive and adaptive crossing with domestic specific beef cattle, which was tested in 1950 as Kazakh White-headed breed.
Currently, there are 3 doctors of agricultural sciences, 5 candidates and 3 highly qualified specialists in the field of breeding and breeding beef cattle.
MAIN ACTIVITY:
– development and introduction of effective methods on selection and breeding;
– creation of new genotypes of beef cattle, use of scientifically based types of selection providing integration and development of heredity in generations of offspring;
– studying of matching ability of lines and related groups of crossing bulls, use of effective combinations in practical selection;
– optimization of selection parameters and use for uterine livestock creation;
– detecting of selected bulls-improvers by its productivity and assessing quality of offspring;
– studying of adaptive and acclimatization properties of imported beef cattle in new breeding conditions.
MAIN DEVELOPMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
During of many years the scientists of the Institute, in close cooperation with the breeding specialists, created beef cattle: zonal type “Zhetisu” of Santa-Gertruda breed, seven factory lines of Kazakh white-headed and two Auliekol breeds.

DEPARTMENT OF HORSE BREEDING
The department of horse breeding established in 1933. Nowadays in the department of horse breeding two doctors and 4 candidates of agricultural sciences work.
MAIN ACTIVITIES:
– Increasing of genetic potential of domestic horse breeds;
– creation of highly generating productive types and lines of horses;
– improving the technology of breeding herd horses, providing high increase in producing of meat and koumiss;
– development of intensive production technology of horse breeding in various regions of Kazakhstan.
MAIN DEVELOPMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
– selected Kushum horse breeds of meat and dairy production line;
– created Kabin meat type of Kazakh horse breed;
– created two intra-breed types (Kozhamberdy and Kulandy) of Mugalzhar breed horses on meat and milk productivity;
– created and tested new Seletin factory type of Kazakh Zhabe with three factory lines;
– created three factory lines of Kazakh Aday horse’s offspring.
The scientists of the department in 2014 won the Republican competition on achievements in the field of inventions “Shapagat 2014” in nomination “The best invention of the year”, for the selection achievement: “Seletin factory type of Kazakh horses”.

DEPARTMENT OF POULTRY FARMING
In 1966 was founded Kazak zonal experimental station on poultry farming – the one scientific center in Kazakhstan and Central Asia providing the poultry industry with new scientific developments in breeding, feeding and keeping technology of poultry. On the basis of experimental station in 1992 as independent department was created the Kazakh scientific research institute of poultry farming which in 2002 – the part of the Kazakh scientific research institute of animal husbandry and forage production.
MAIN ACTIVITIES:
– selection, pedigree work and creation of breeding and commodity flocks in different type of farms;
– development and introduction of scientifically based norms of poultry feeding with the use of probiotics, enzymatic complexes, extruded and granulated mixed fodder;
– development of energy saving technologies on production of poultry farming;
– rendering laboratory services in determination of quality of forages and feed additives.
MAIN DEVELOPMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
– created two-line egg cross “Alatau”;
– created two-line cross “Medeo”;
– created new high-productive cross Arman of Peking ducks;
– tested domestic breed of ducks “Byshkul color” on the basis of improved cross “Arman”;
– created high-yielding lines, paternal – BC-1 and maternal BC-2.

DEPARTMENT OF PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY AND STANDARDIZATION OF LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS
The department was established in 1974. For the period of its existence, 4 doctoral and 8 candidate dissertations were prepared and defended in the department, more than 750 scientific works were published, including 19 monographs, 60 recommendations, 77 brochures.
THE BASIC DIRECTIONS OF ACTIVITY:
– development of innovative elements of technology on maintenance beef cattle and its existence into domestic infrastructure;
– studying adaptive qualities of beef cattle of foreign breeding in various regions of Kazakhstan;
– studying of animals meat qualities of domestic and foreign breeds.
MAIN DEVELOPMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
– developed different technologies for growing, rearing, feeding and fattening young cattle;
– developed recommendations for the production of high-quality beef;
– developed the concept of standardization progress of agricultural production;
– developed the technology of ecologically high-grade beef production;
– developed and introduced by the Committee on Standardization technical conditions for the standard “export of horse meat “;
– developed cold method and technology of growing young dairy cattle in economic entities of different forms of ownership;
– developed rational technological elements for preparation of heifers and stale cows for calving.

DEPARTMENT OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY OF REPRODUCTION AND BIOTECHNOLOGY OF LARGE CATTLE
The department was established in 2012 and includes a stationary laboratory for the production and cultivation of embryos of farm animals in vitro and in vivo. The laboratory is equipped with equipment for carrying out works on transgenesis, obtaining monozygotic embryos (cloning), qualitative evaluation of seed producers and others.
THE BASIC DIRECTIONS OF ACTIVITY:
– study reason of cows infertility in dairy complexes;
– development and improvement of methods for repair the reproductive function of cows;
– development of hormonal stimulation schemes for superovulation and methods for obtaining multiple embryos of cows;
– development of methods for increasing embryo engraftment during transplantation;
– introduction of scientific developments and adaptation of innovative technologies for the reproduction of cattle in breeding;
– scientific support of economic entities in the field of reproduction of dairy and meat cattle directions of productivity;
– carrying out works on artificial insemination of dairy and meat directions of productivity, including seed divided by sex.

DEPARTMENT OF GENETIC RESOURCES OF LARGE CATTLE
The Department of Genetic Resources of Cattle was established in 2012 to improve the methods for assessing the pedigree value of dairy, dairy-meat and meat productivity. The department employs 1 doctor and 2 candidates of science.
THE BASIC DIRECTIONS OF ACTIVITY:
– study of the productive and biological characteristics of domestic and foreign livestock;
– study of the main and additional features for the selection of cattle;
– study of genetic characteristics for the purpose of efficient selection work;
– improvement of methods for assessing breeding value;
– monitoring, development of effective systems of management of genetic resources, as well as programs for conservation of species of Kazakhstan.
MAIN DEVELOPMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
– methodology for assessing breeding value of dairy and meat cattle, through indexing has been developed;
– models of new intra-breed types of dairy cattle cows have been developed.

DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS OF AGRICULTURAL ANIMALS
The department was established in 2012, equipped with the necessary technologies for conducting research in the field of genetics, molecular genetics and cytogenetics, practically for all types of farm animals. All research is carried out, from the beginning sampling of biological material, collection of zoo-technical parameters, to the final result obtaining molecular genetic and cytogenetic passport, as well as making a genetic examination of breeding products.
The laboratory of the department is accredited with the standard system of the Republic of Kazakhstan for compliance with the requirements of ST RK ISO/IEC 17025-2007 “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories” No.KZ.I.02.0377 dated February 20, 2015. Currently, the department is working on entering into International Society of Animal Genetics (ISAG). The staff of the department passed an international training on genotyping DNA, have certificates of Life Technologies company. The laboratory is equipped with modern facilities from Applied Biosystems, including a 1-capillary genetic analyzer ABI Prism 310 and attack on testing 12 DNA locus of bovine cattle.
Recent years, a genotype card file containing data on more than 8.5 thousand head of cattle, including about 1.0 thousand heads of Hereford breed, which allows not only to control the origin of animals, but also in necessary cases to clarify paternity and identify belonging to the breed.
